Health Benefits of Lycopene
Lycopene is a natural pigment contained in plants. It mainly exists in the mature fruits of tomato, a solanaceous plant. It is one of the strongest antioxidants found in plants in nature.
1. Lycopene has antioxidant properties
Lycopene can quench singlet oxygen or capture peroxide free radicals by physical and chemical means. Lycopene can also eliminate oxidative free radicals through the chemical formula of other forms of reactive oxygen species, such as hydrogen peroxide, nitrite and other oxidative free radicals, which can cause lipid peroxidation to form a variety of products, which are related to human aging, cancer, autoimmune diseases, anemia and other diseases.
2.Lycopene regulates cell growth and metabolism
Usually, there are channels composed of membrane proteins between cells, which have selective permeability and allow the passage of second messengers and growth regulators. Cells transmit growth regulation signals in cell population through gap junction intercellular communication (GJIC) to regulate the normal proliferation and differentiation of cells. Experiments show that lycopene inhibits tumor growth by inducing intercellular connectivity, enhancing GJIC between normal cells, controlling cell growth and inducing cell differentiation.
3.Lycopene can regulate the metabolism of cholesterol
Lycopene is a low cholesterol agent, which can inhibit 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acid monoacyl coenzyme A in macrophages, and it is a rate limiting enzyme of cholesterol biosynthesis. It was found that when lycopene was added to the medium of macrophage culture, its cholesterol synthesis decreased, and lycopene also increased the activity of macrophage low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor. The experiment also showed that the supplement of 60mg lycopene every day for three months could reduce the concentration of cytoplasmic LDL cholesterol by 14%.
4.Lycopene can prevent and inhibit tumor
Lycopene can prevent and inhibit tumor, on the one hand, because of its antioxidant effect, on the other hand, lycopene can block the gene mutation process of tissue cells under the action of external mutagens, which is one of the important mechanisms of tumor formation. Studies have shown that lycopene has certain inhibitory effects on digestive tract cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer and bladder cancer.
